Earth Matters - Coral Reef Capsule - WK23

Earth Matters.

Earth matters is a regular window into everything that drives us at PANGAIA. From the motivation behind our latest material capsules and the impact that our innovations can make, to what inspires our restlessness in designing a more Earth-positive future.

Making waves.

On June 8th we celebrated World Oceans Day. To mark the occasion, we launched our Coral Reef Capsule—a range inspired by the colors of our planet’s coral reefs. Did you know that coral reefs are among the most biologically diverse and valuable ecosystems in the world? They only occupy 0.1% of the ocean but support 25% of all marine species on the planet—which is why it’s so vital that we protect them from further harm caused by climate change.

A portion of the proceeds of our Coral Reef Capsule is donated to SeaTrees, an ocean-focused non-profit taking action by regenerating ocean health worldwide. SeaTrees’ Bali Coral Reef restoration project employs local Balinese fishermen to protect and preserve the reef and monitor regeneration until it can survive on its own. In 2021, 6000 fragments of coral were planted, with another 6000 being planted this year. Their coral cultivation project will provide a habitat for more than 500 species of fish, and create 20 jobs for local villagers, supporting 20 families.

Innovation’s in our DNA.

Have you discovered our latest PANGAIA LAB innovation yet? This week, we introduced The NXT GEN Hoodie, powered by Spiber and made with a breakthrough Brewed Protein™ fibers created through a fermentation process using microbes. This unique technology analyzes and builds on the DNA codes of various species in nature, to create a brand new material non-reliant on petrochemicals.

Spiber’s database of genetic code sequences from different organisms is analyzed in order to design synthetic DNA which is then used to make Brewed Protein™ fibers. This process uses far less water and land to create than traditional wool or cashmere fibers—offering us a lower impact, scalable material alternative that could one day be used to create the homes we live in and the cars we drive, as well as the clothes we wear.

Through our LAB partnerships, we’re making huge leaps forward in our ongoing commitment to developing forward-thinking, game changing materials that are better for the planet.

Chasing Coral on Netflix

For a deeper dive into the realities of our coral reefs, we’re rewatching the eye-opening 2017 documentary Chasing Coral, which follows the journey of a team of divers, scientists and photographers documenting the disappearance of a once vibrant reef ecosystem.

Spineless: The Science of Jellyfish and The Art of Growing a Backbone by Juli Berwald

Did you know jellyfish have been swimming in our waters for over half a billion years? In this fascinating book, ocean scientist and author Juli Berwald details her journey traveling the globe to learn more about one of our ocean’s oldest and most poorly understood animals.

Ologies: Acoustic Ecology (nature recordings) with Eddie Game

In this episode of Ologies, host Alie Ward speaks to acoustic ecologist Dr. Eddie Game on the scientific studies of nature’s sounds; from how noisy the ocean is, to capturing sonic evidence of rare animals, and what wild sounds can teach us about our planet.
