What is COP26?

COP26 or United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference is the annual global summit on our world’s most pressing issue: climate change.

In November, over 200 world leaders came together in Glasgow, Scotland with the common goal to determine actionable change-making initiatives.

Why is it important?

World leaders will come together in Scotland for climate action. What we do now in the next 3 years will define life on earth for the next 100 years.

“Delayed from 2020 due to the global pandemic, COP26 follows a year in which, from massive wildfires in Siberia to unprecedented flooding in Germany and Belgium, to famine in Madagascar and record-shattering heat in the American West, it’s becoming abundantly clear that climate change has contributed to increasingly frequent and severe weather events."

PANGAIA’s commitments at COP26

• Build dialogue with business leaders from across the world on how we can use problem-solving science and innovation to create better products and drive Earth-positive change
• Identify partners for an ambitious alliance across industries and borders, to save bees and other pollinators who are at risk of going extinct due to declining biodiversity.
• Come back with new goals, new actions and new friends, who all join us in our mission to create an Earth positive future together

What does ‘Earth positive’ mean?

Our goal as a business is to give back to the planet more than we take.

How we’re creating connections to tackle change

We hosted an event that facilitated an evening of connection and creativity with innovators all around the world to explore radical new ways we can tackle the climate crisis, together.

We’ve collaborated with SeaTrees to make the event carbon neutral and Ocean+Positive — planting 4 mangrove trees and restoring 1 square foot of kelp forest for every ton of offset carbon.

PANGAIA Biodiversity roundtable at COP26

Did you know that human survival depends on bees, as 75% of food crops rely directly or indirectly on bee pollination? Yet bees and other pollinators are at risk of going extinct due to declining biodiversity. On Tuesday 2nd November, we hosted a roundtable, on the importance of bees and pollinators, their role in preserving biodiversity, and the need for increased public awareness of their cause.

6 Things we learnt from COP26 this week

1. 100+ leaders have pledged to end deforestation by 2030.

2. 12 countries have committed to a $12bn funding pot to assist in reforestation projects around the world.

3. 90% of global GDP is now covered by net zero pledges, which may limit global heating to below 2°C.

4. Over 40 countries have pledged to phase out coal – the single biggest contributor to climate change.

5. Representation and inclusivity are key – “people who are closest to the pain should be closest to the power” - Yazmany Arboleda.

6. Art & culture can be a powerful tool to help ignite and drive positive climate action by giving people a sensory and direct experience of the world we are protecting.

Is there hope?

Yes! We’re driven by science and rational optimism. What we do today is more important than ever. How YOU live also influences the bigger picture: We can all eat less meat, fly less, drive less, shop smarter and better.

Here’s how you can use your purchase power for good—offset your carbon footprint, support life on land or support our oceans.
